Itinerary – Land only package

Day 1: Saturday, June 6, 2015: ZURICH — BASEL 100 KM
Arrival in Zurich, the economic capital of Switzerland and a vibrant city on the shores of Lake Zürich. Meet your tour director and coach driver. Enjoy free time for lunch in the bustling old town. During the guided tour of the old town stroll down the narrow cobblestone lanes and discover medieval houses, the Grossmünster Cathedral, a signature landmark of the city, the Fraumünster Church, renowned for its stained glass windows by Giacometti and Chagall, and the Bahnhofstrasse, the city’s main street with high-end shopping, banking and modern architecture. Continuation to Basel, the oldest university town in Switzerland, bordering the German Black Forest and the French Alsace region.
Check-in at your hotel and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Sunday, June 7, 2015: BASEL:VISIT
Enjoy a morning guided walking tour of the medieval old town of Basel, the cultural capital of Switzerland. With more than 40 museums Basel has the highest concentration of museums in the country. The city is also home to the oldest university in Switzerland. Stroll around and discover the large market place, the red sandstone city hall and the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral. In the old town you will find lovely antique shops and contemporary buildings designed by renowned architects.
Lunch and afternoon at leisure.

Take the opportunity to taste a “Basler Leckaerli”, a traditional honey and ginger biscuit typical of Basel, or take the tram to visit the famous Beyeler Foundation gallery in Riehen, where you will see the works of some great artists from the last hundred years including Monet’s Water Lilies.
Dinner and evening at leisure.

Day 3: Monday, June 8, 2015: BASEL — NEUCHÂTEL — MONTREUX REGION 245 KM
Morning departure towards French-speaking Switzerland via the Birse Valley and Delémont, capital of the Canton of Jura, to reach Neuchâtel, capital of the canton that bears its name. A guided visit of the medieval old town will help you discover this charming city and its highlights such as the castle and the collegiate Church dating back to the 12th century. In the afternoon enjoy a tour and wine tasting at a winemaker’s in Cressier before heading to Vevey, the oldest city of the Vaud Riviera, located on the north shore of Lake Geneva.

Day 4: Tuesday, June 9, 2015: MONTREUX REGION: EXCURSION 75 KM
In the morning enjoy a guided visit of the Chillon Castle, a famous medieval fortress built on a rocky island and immortalized by English poet Lord Byron. Wander through its corridors, turrets and dungeons. Through the years the castle was used as an arsenal, prison and temporary residence of the Counts of Savoy and still inspires writers and poets today. On your way to Lausanne discover the views of the Lavaux Vineyards, a UNESCO world heritage site. Lunch at leisure.

In the afternoon a guided visit of Lausanne, capital of the Canton of Vaud and home to the International Olympic Committee, will acquaint you with this wonderful city. The town is built on three hills, surrounded by vineyard-covered slopes, with Lake Geneva at its feet. Rising impressively from the opposing French lakeshore are the Savoy Alps. The attractive old town is largely car-free. Small alleyways with cafes and boutiques shape the streetscape in the medieval city centre. Return to Vevey at the end of the afternoon.
Free time for dinner and evening activities.

Day 5: Wednesday, June 10, 2015: MONTREUX REGION — LA GRUYÈRE — INTERLAKEN 175 KM
This morning depart by coach to Montreux and board the scenic Golden Pass train to Montbovon where you will connect with the TPF line (Transports publics Fribourgeois) and continue to Gruyères in the Canton of Fribourg. Arrive in Gruyères and enjoy a guided walking tour of this beautiful medieval town at the foot of the Moléson Pre-Alps. During lunch, enjoy a local specialty “croûtes au fromage”…slices of bread with melted cheese on top.

Continue towards Broc in the Sarine Valley for a visit and tasting at a chocolate factory.

Then head into the Bernese Oberland through the Jaun Pass and Simmental Valley and enjoy the view of Lake Thun. Arrival in Interlaken, impressive resort town overlooked by three famed mountains: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Day 6: Thursday, June 11, 2015: INTERLAKEN: EXCURSION 120 KM
Weather permitting, early departure for an optional excursion by cogwheel railway train to the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe (3454 m), located between the Jungfrau and Mönch mountains and offering breathtaking views of the Aletsch Glacier, the Jura region and the gorgeous Swiss Mittelland in Western Switzerland.

Lunch at leisure at the top of Europe before beginning the descent. Early afternoon departure for Bern, capital of Switzerland. Upon arrival enjoy a guided walking tour of the old town and see the Parliament which stands high above the Aare River.
Dinner in the old town.
Return to Interlaken in the evening.
Overnight in Interlaken.

Day 7: Friday, June 12, 2015: INTERLAKEN — HABKERN — LUCERNE 86 KM
Morning visit of an alphorn factory where you will learn more about the Swiss national instrument and symbol of dairy farming. Continue to Lake Brienz via the Brünig Pass and the cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden as you head towards Lucerne and the picturesque Lake of Lucerne.

After lunch at leisure in the city, a guided walking tour of Lucerne will help you discover the Lion Monument, the wine market, the Jesuit Church and the famous Chapel Bridge, the oldest covered bridge in Europe which was partly destroyed by fire in 1993.

Day 8: Saturday, June 13, 2015: LUCERNE: EXCURSION
In the morning you will travel to the Canton of Schwyz and Brunnen for a guided tour of the Swiss Knife Valley visitor center (Victorinox), the renowned Swiss knife manufacturer. Head to Einsiedeln for a guided visit of the famous Benedictine Abbey Church. Return to Lucerne for an afternoon at leisure. Your guide will be able to suggest local activities such as a cogwheel train and cable car ascent of Mount Pilatus (2120 m); a round trip excursion to Engelberg by train and a revolving gondola ascent of Mount Titlis (3238 m); or why not a visit to the Swiss Museum of Transport or a lovely paddle steamer ride on Lake Lucerne.

Morning travel to the picturesque medieval town of Stein am Rhein located at the German border on the Rhine River. A guided visit will familiarize you with the “jewel on the Untersee” famous for its well-preserved Old Town featuring magnificent painted facades and half-timbered houses. Continue towards Schaffhausen for a guided visit of the canton’s capital and the emblem of the town, the imposing Munot Fortress.

In the afternoon, we head towards the Rhine Falls for a panoramic walk on both shores of Europe’s largest waterfall. Late afternoon departure towards Zurich airport.

Day 10: Monday, June 15, 2015: ZURICH — DEPARTURE
Enjoy a free morning for last minute shopping.
Meet in the hotel lobby and walk to the Zurich airport.

A non-refundable deposit of CAD 600.00 per person is required to secure your place. Final full payment will be required 90 days prior to departure. (Your deposit is refunded in the event the tour is cancelled by the organizer). Trip becomes non-refundable once final payment is made. Trip cancellation insurance is therefore highly recommended.
