Day 1 – ARRIVAL IN ZURICH and Appenzell , June 9 and Sept. 1


Introduction day

Arrive at the Zurich Airport where European Walking Tours (EWT) personnel will greet participants for a 1.5-hour transfer by private coach to the hotel in Appenzell (816m / 2676 feet). Welcome drink and short orientation briefing. Introduction to Appenzell and the surrounding area.   Dinner at the hotel. (D)

Day 2 –  MOUNT KRONBERG WALK June 10 and Sept. 2

2 Mount Kronberg

Active Day: 3.5 hours of walking through meadows and on mountain trails, some paved

Short train ride to Gontenbad (896m / 2940 feet). Walk on a high plateau through meadows and along a high moor on easy trails to Jakobsbad (870m / 2850 feet). Continue by cable car up to Kronberg Mountain (1660m / 5450 feet) with its magnificent views of the first Alpstein range and its highest peak, Mount Saentis (2530m / 8300 feet). Cable car and train back to Appenzell. Leave the train at Gontenbad and walk the rest of the distance back to Appenzell. Arrive back in Appenzell with optional excursion to the museum of Appenzell. Dinner at a local restaurant. (B,D)

3 BruelisauDay 3 – HOHER KASTEN WALK June 11 and Sept. 3

Active Day: 2.5 hours of walking on mountain trails

Start walking from the hotel along the Sitter River to Weissbad (823m / 2700 feet) or (optional) on a moderate uphill trail to Bruelisau (914m / 3000 feet), then ride the cable car up to Mount Hoher Kasten (1830m / 6000 feet). Enjoy the magnificent views of the Alpstein, Rhine Valley and the Austrian Alps. Return to Appenzell via cable car and train or by foot and train. Individual dinner. (B)

Day 4 – ST. GALLEN’S OLD TOWN & ABBEY LIBRARY June 12 and Sept. 4

4 St. Gallen Abbey

 Sightseeing Day: 1 hour of walking and transportation by train

Train ride (45 minutes) to St. Gallen. Field trip and lecture in the Cathedral of the late baroque period and the Abbey Library, containing manuscripts dating back to the 8th century. The library is housed in Switzerland’s most beautiful rococo secular hall with stucco work by the Gigi brothers and ceiling painting by Josef Wannenmacher. Remainder of day for independent activities – return to Appenzell at your leisure. Train to Appenzell (every 30 minutes) takes approximately 45 minutes. Dinner at the hotel. (B,D)

Day 5 – EBENALP-SCHAEFLER WALK June 13 and Sept. 5

5 Wildkirchli

Active Day: 3.5 hours of walking on paved roads, gravel paths and mountain trails

Walk begins by train to Wasserauen, then cable car to Ebenalp (1524m / 5000feet). Descend through the prehistoric cave of Wildkirchli and stop at the most thrilling guesthouse of the Alpstein, the “Aescher”. Continue the field trip to the Chlus saddle at the foot of Mt. Schaefler with magnificent views of the Appenzeller Mountains, then return to Appenzell by cable car and train. Dinner at a restaurant. (B,D)

Day 6Leisure day June 14 and Sept 6


Or participate in one of the following options:

1) Enjoy a cooking class with a local chef, who will demonstrate how to prepare a typical Swiss dish


2) Ride an E-Bike, also known as “Flyer”. Thanks to the electric motor support of the Flyer, we are able to enjoy twice as much of the breath-taking Alpine panorama. Dinner at the hotel. (B,D)

7 Werdenberg

Transfer and Sightseeing Day: 2 hours of walking on paved roads, transfer 3.5 hours

Transfer by private coach with a stop and a 1-hour independent excursion at the medieval castle of Werdenberg (520m / 1706 feet), founded in 1230. The walk to the castle is uphill, taking approximately 15 minutes. Continue along Walensee Lake, an independent lunch stop in Einsiedeln, known for its splendid church, constructed between 1674 and 1770, considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Switzerland. Arrive at the hotel in Engelberg (1050m / 3444 feet). Orientation stroll through the village prior to the welcome briefing. Dinner at the hotel. (B,D)

8-Benedictine-Monastry-EngelbergDay 8 – BENEDICTINE MONASTERY / WATERFALL VALLEY WALK June 16 and Sept 8

Active Day: 3 hours of walking through meadows and mountain trails, some paved

Walk from the hotel to the magnificent Benedictine Monastery, founded in 1120, for a guided excursion. A curator of the Monastery will introduce the participants to the incredible wainscoted wall panels and furniture. Walk to the waterfall (1084m / 3555 feet) where we take a cable car to Fürenalp (1690m / 5544 feet). A light lunch at the “Hütte”, then return to the valley by cable car and walk back to Engelberg. On the way back we will visit a local family who owns one of Engelberg’s oldest farm homes (Dellenstein) – the lady of the house will welcome everyone with tea and Apfelkuchen (apple pie). Individual dinner. (B,L)

Day 9 – LOCAL FLORA & FAUNA at RISTIS-BRUNNI  June 17 and Sept 9

9 Ristis

Active Day: 3 hours of walking through meadows and on mountain trails, some with small rocks

Walk from the hotel accompanied by a local flower/plant expert to the cable car to Ristis (1615m / 5300 feet), and continue to Brunni Mountain by chair lift (1860m / 6103 feet).  Depending on the time of year you will be able to view some of the region’s wildlife and flora while walking along this majestic ridge. Walk on to Rigidal Stafel, then back to Ristis and return to Engelberg by cable car. Dinner at the hotel. (B,D)

Day 10 – BERNESE OBERLAND by public transportation June 18 and Sept 10

10 Maennlichen

Active Day: 1.5 hours of walking, approx. 8 hours of train/boat rides

When boarding the Luzern–Interlaken Express you are about to go on an unforgettable journey right into the heart of Switzerland. This two-hour ride will take you along the shores of crystal-clear lakes, past romantic waterfalls and over the magnificent Brünig mountain pass. From Meiringen the Central Railway takes you to the idyllic village of Brienz, famous for its carvings. You can complete the journey from Brienz to Interlaken whilst relaxing on board a boat on Lake Brienz. The BOB railway takes you from Interlaken along the valley of the Schwarze Lütschine River to the glacier village of Grindelwald. The onward journey to the Männlichen will be via gondola.

The fabulous high-Alpine trail takes you on an easy hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg (1.5 hours). Walking over Alpine pastures, always facing the majestic Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau mountain chain, you can let your gaze sweep over towering rock walls and icy-blue glaciers. Views extend over Alpine pastures down to the Grindelwald Valley and up to Grosse Scheidegg and the jagged peaks of the Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn. Starting at Männlichen (2222 m / 7290 feet), the trail leads south along the eastern flank of the Tschuggen. Walking at the same level you reach Honegg and follow the loop skirting the lower slopes of the Lauberhorn ridge to Rotstöckli, from where it’s only a short distance to Kleine Scheidegg (2061 m / 6762 feet). Return on the Wengernalp Railway to Grindelwald and by train back to Engelberg. Dinner at hotel. (B,D)

11 Titlis iceDay 11 – MT. TITLIS – THE GLACIER & THE MOUNTAIN LAKE June 19 and Sept 11

Active Day: 2.5 hours of walking over snowfields, meadows and on mountain trails

Walk from the hotel to the Mt. Titlis (3240m / 10,627 feet) cable car travelling part of the way in the world’s first revolving cable car, “Rotair”. At the top of the highest mountain in Central Switzerland you will witness breath-taking scenery and walk through the Glacier Grotto. From Mt. Titlis walk over beautiful snowfields before taking the funicular to Trubsee (1795m / 5890 feet) down to Gerschnialp (1274m / 4180 feet) for a special lunch at the mountain hut of a local cheese-maker. Day 12 – CRADLE OF SWITZERLAND June 20 and Sept 12

12 Ruetli

Active Day: 2 hours of walking on mountain trail and through meadows

This Switzerland adventure will end in spectacular fashion. You can choose between a history day and an adventure day.

Swiss history: The final walk begins with a 30-minute train ride and continues by post bus to Seelisberg (801m / 2627 feet). Walk down through the forest to Rutli-Meadows (510m / 1670 feet) — the “Cradle of Switzerland” where the Confederates convened to confirm the Everlasting League of 1291. Have a typical Swiss lunch (individual) overlooking the Bay of Uri, the southernmost section of Lake Lucerne. Board the boat across Lake Lucerne to Beckenried for your return to Engelberg via post bus and train. Dinner at hotel. (B,D)

13-lucerneDay 13 – LUCERNE June 21 and Sept 13

Sightseeing/Shopping Day: 1.5 hour of walking on pavement

After breakfast we will travel to Lucerne. After a 1.5 hour guided tour we will have some leisure time for shopping and exploring.

Optional: We can organise a mountaintop excursion to one of the famous surrounding mountains: Rigi, Pilatus or Stanserhorn. Not included in trip cost – see optional pricing on last page. Farewell dinner. (B,D)

Day 14 – AUF WIEDERSEHEN June 22 and Sept 14

Travel time 1.5 hours

Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Zurich airport by private coach.

A non-refundable deposit of CAD 500.00 per person is required to secure your place. Final full payment will be required 90 days prior to departure. (Your deposit is refunded in the event the tour is cancelled by the organizer). Trip becomes non-refundable once final payment is made. Trip cancellation insurance is therefore highly recommended.
